Come & Try Our Free Pilates Class – May 2nd.

pilates class copySaturday, May 2nd is World Pilates Day and to celebrate this day, Sport & Spinal Physiotherapy is holding a “Come & Try” Pilates class for new Pilates clients at their Gungahlin practice. If you have ever wondered what a Pilates class is all about, well wonder no more. Our approach to Pilates is unlike your Pilates often seen at the local gym or Pilates studio. Our approach to clinical Pilates is based on the Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute (AAPI) method through which our Pilates Physiotherapists hold certification.

What are the benefits of Pilates

  • Pilates increases your flexibility.
  • Pilates will strengthen  your “core” muscles. These muscles are your abdominal and spinal muscles.
  • Pilates will tone your body and you will develop long and lean muscles.
  • Pilates can help you to better control your posture and alignment.
  • Pilates helps you to develop a mind and body connection.
  • Pilates encourages the focus on breath, which can help you decrease anxiety and muscle tension.

What is the difference between Pilates and Yoga?

Yoga and Pilates share some major benefits such as flexibility, mind/body connection and breath awareness. The differences are:

  • Pilates uses specialised Pilates equipment such as our Pilates reformer, magic circles, foam rollers and exercise bands as well as floor mats.
  • Pilates is focussed more on the body & fitness, whereas yoga has a more body & spiritual focus
  • Pilates focusses more on strengthen your “powerhouse” or your “core” . This being your abs, torso, and lower spine. Having a strong core will assist you in your daily activities, reduce injuries and aches, perform better at your chosen sport or fitness regime.
