Clinical classes at Sport & Spinal Physiotherapy is a mind body conditioning exercise program that targets the deep postural muscles of the abdomen and spine to improve overall central core stability and posture.

physio run pilates mat classes

At Sport & Spinal Physiotherapy, our approach is unlike the classes often seen at the local gym or studio. Our approach is based on the Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute (AAPI) method by which our physios are trained. This approach is founded on the physiotherapy model providing individualised and specific exercises based on the latest evidence to improve central core control with optimum muscle activation with the aim of improving function and correct posture. Improved function with ideal alignment concurrently can help to reduce your aches and pains as well as minimise the risk of future injury (Hodges et al, 1997, 2008, 2010 and Hides et al, 1996).

Specifically, our physios will target your deep stabilising muscles of your back, abdomen and pelvic floor region. These muscles act together to form a closed cylinder of stability to form a strong and functional spine (Hodges 1999). Our physios will initially concentrate on correct activation of these muscles then challenge the central core by introducing graduated arm and leg movements and stretches.

Matwork Group Classes (using pilates equipment)

Mat work classes are conducted on a dense foam mat whereby you can utilise your own body weight. Mat work classes offer enormous freedom in being able to enjoy flowing movements but always at your own pace.

Beginner classes incorporate certain exercises being broken down into components as they are taught, ensuring you have a sound technique and are confident in progressing your skill further.

Intermediate/expert classes build on the foundations of the beginner levels. These classes incorporate props, such as theraband, small Pilates ball and magic circle.

Group classes are capped at 8 people. Mat work classes at lunch run for 45 minutes. Mat work classes in the morning and evening run for 60 minutes.

Reformer Group Classes (using Pilates reformer)

FAQ's

What if I miss a class?

You can have a make-up class (depending on class size) in another class.

How do I get started?

Step 1: You will need to book in for an initial assessment consultation so that we can tailor the matwork class to suit your needs. The assessment step can be by-passed if you are already having physiotherapy treatment at the clinic – but talk to your physiotherapist first to see if the class is suitable for you.

Step 2: The assessing physiotherapist will determine if the class is suitable for you and if so you can start the classes straight away.

Step 3: If you are suitable, you can be placed in Level 1 or level 2 or advanced classes according to your ability.

How do I claim my private Health Fund rebate?

You will need to pay for all the classes in advance and then claim back from your health fund at the end of the class series. Your tax invoice will show the dates attended for each class.
