Orthotic therapy is a form of podiatry treatment that uses specially designed devices that are worn inside the shoe to control abnormal foot function and improve lower limb alignment. The idea being that this alteration can help eliminate lower limb pain and possibly enhance performance through improved gait efficiencies.
The human body has a remarkable ability to adapt to musculoskeletal imbalances often with compensations and subsequent pain in other areas of the body. Hence, poor foot function may be a significant contributor to knee, hip and back pain, even without the presence of any foot pain. Correcting any poor foot function and improving lower limb alignment can help with not only foot and ankle pain, but can also significantly help with reducing knee, hip and back pain.
At Your Podiatry Canberra, located in Sport & Spinal Physiotherapy, our physios and podiatrists are well capable of and experienced in assessing foot function and lower limb alignment. So no matter if you present to our clinic for physiotherapy or podiatry and you have knee pain, hip pain, back pain, foot pain or ankle pain, we can accurately determine the influence of any poor foot function or lower limb malalignment has on your injury. If the influence is nil or very mild, footwear advice and exercises alone may suffice in controlling any abnormalities. However, if the influence is significant, you will probably require orthotics of some sort from our podiatrists.
We only prescribe orthotics if your feet significantly contribute to your problem.
Our orthotics have been designed by our podiatrists for clients from Gungahlin, Canberra City, and the wider Canberra community for long lasting relief of a variety of conditions including:

What type of orthotics do we have?
For complex foot problems, our podiatrists may recommend a custom-made orthotic (usually with a thermoplastic material) made in a laboratory from a plaster cast moulding or a 3D scan of your foot. For less complex problems, we have a range of heat-moulded orthotics that may suffice. Making quality orthotics takes years of experience and in many ways is considered an art form. Our podiatrists have these skills and can supply quality orthotics to suit your needs.
All of our orthotics are supplied with a full length cover meaning you get an ideal fit that doesn't move around in the shoe. Your feet are like no other and this is why our orthotics are all custom made to fit your particular foot type.
Orthotics are designed to alter lower limb alignment and as such it is not unusual to experience some mild discomfort for a few weeks as your body adapts to its new position. However, if your orthotics are unduly uncomfortable and we have modified your orthotics many times without relief, then we will discard these orthotics and replace them with a new pair (probably from a different laboratory) for FREE.
